This course was designed by Eddie Hackett and many claim it is the best work carried out by the Irish designer.

The course is home of Belmullet Golf Club, which was founded in 1925 and originally played on a nine-hole course at Cross, near Binghamstown but moved to Carne Golf Links in 1992.

Dermot Gileece, a respected Irish golf journalist, is one of those who couldn't believe his eyes when he first visited the course, saying: "Carne is, quite simply, the most stunning discovery I have made in golf. Even the impressive reports I heard about the place hadn't prepared me for the splendour of the terrain".
