The charming town of Westport, on the shores of Clew Bay, is only a short drive away from Newport House enabling guests enjoy a day sight-seeing or shopping. One of the few planned towns in the country, it is an estate town, built to the plan of James Wyatt, the well known architect of the Georgian period. One of its outstanding features is the elegant tree lined boulevard, known as The Mall. Westport House, home of Lord Sligo, is open to the public during the summer months. The history of the development of Westport, from the time it was an O'Malley stronghold in the 16th century to the present day, is brought alive in the Heritage Centre, located at Westport Quay. (Westport - meaning The Stone Fort of Beeve). Westport House, inclusive ticket gives access to the many attractions in Westport House Country Estate, a destination for all the family. Those interested in history can enjoy the graceful lines and period furnishings of 17th century Westport House, designed by Richard Castle. The estate, developed over 30 years, has a children's zoo, ball pond, pitch and putt, a playground, boating, antique shop, art centre, miniature railway, hill slide, slippery dip, model railway, dungeons, supabounce, fishing, pinkie rabbit and old kitchen tea room. |
